The Retail Shrink Benchmarking and Analysis Tool
The National Shrink Database® (NSD) is an innovative tool for the retail industry
to benchmark shrink experience and security measure utilization across the United
States. NSD members can examine data for different retail sectors and can drill
down from national to state and local levels. CAP Index, Inc. and LP Innovations, Inc. jointly
developed the NSD to facilitate information-sharing and benchmarking, while preserving
the confidentiality of sensitive information.
Benefits of the NSD:
- Industry-wide or retail sector benchmarking statistics on shrink averages, shrink
distributions, and security measure utilization
- Data available at national, state and local levels (including ZIP code and 1-mile
radius searches)
- Constantly improving data through membership growth and database enhancements
Uses of the NSD:
- Research local shrink levels and security measure utilization to fine-tune your
loss prevention initiatives at existing locations
- Improve budgeting and resource allocation for new store openings and relocations
The map to the right divides the 50 states and the District of Columbia into quartiles
based on shrink averages and correspondingly shades
them from highest (dark blue) to lowest (light blue). Shrink averages can vary significantly
across retail sectors and from one chain to the next. Therefore, NSD members are
able to restrict comparisons to specific retail sectors so that only the most similar
chains are evaluated.
Examining shrink data by average percentile provides
another means of controlling for chain-to-chain variability. Regardless of a chain’s
specific shrink numbers, average percentiles show whether shrink levels in a given
area tend to fall at the top (100th percentile) or bottom (1st percentile) of a
chain’s range of shrink values.
The bar charts to the right show the usage levels of eighteen different security measures for all retail locations in the
National Shrink Database. NSD members are further able to examine differential security
measure utilization within specific retail sectors and for local ZIP code and 1-Mile
Radius searches.
